Dar invitational gala attracts 200 swimmers DAILY NEWS REPORTER

At least 200 swimmers from various swimming clubs in Tanzania Mainland, Zanzibar as well as neighbouring countries in East Africa are expected to feature in the gala. DSC Secretary General, Inviolata Itatiro said apart of promoting the game, the gala aim is to gauge the swimmers talent, while also scouting the new one for the benefit of the nation.
The participating ages will be from six years and under - 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 years. Inviolata said the sport is heading to the positive direction and it was the task of swimming stakeholders to organise many events to makes the swimmers active.
“This maiden gala is a continuation of DSC’s mission to bring awareness and encourage learning how to swim among children and adults in all walks of life. The gala provides a platform to talk about swimming and build awareness of its values in multiple communications medium.”
“For the children, parents and guests that will participate, it is an exciting event to reinforce affinity to the sport, encourage striving for excellence and love of the sport,” said Inviolata. She explained that the DSC has been a champion of teaching and promoting swimming as a lifesaving skill in Tanzania since it began in 2007.
“Most Tanzanians have a fear of water and drowning is among the leading causes of unintentional injury-related deaths, particularly in children.
And Tanzania is enriched with water bodies,” she said.
“In addition to being a life safety measure, learning to swim early instills discipline, builds stamina, courage and confidence, and most of all it is fun. Swimming requires the moving of multiple muscle groups in high intensity resulting in an incredible workout for all ages,” she said. She said trophies will be awarded to the top three swimmers in each age group, while medals will be given for first (gold), second (silver) and third will be given bronze.
There will be overall team trophies to be awarded to the best first team, best second team and the best third team. Certificates will be awarded to the top six finalists in each individual event and top three relays in each relay event.
